Adidas is bringing a Y2K aesthetic to the Superstar with a treatment reminiscent of jelly shoes.

The Adidas Superstar Bubble comes wrapped in a bulbous shell appearing in several different colors and gradients. Underneath, the Superstar appears in its classic black and white colorway, but the shells above it appear in orange, purple and mint, as well as gradients in red and blue, orange and black, and pink and black.

Stopping at the edge of the sole, the shells mirror the shapes of the shoe’s features underneath in exaggerated fashion, including the famous shell toe and Three Stripes motif. An Adidas trefoil logo also appears on the tongue and heel, and as demonstrated by social media users, the shell comes off easily should you want to mix and match or whatever else might come to mind.

Jelly shoes originated in the ’80s — the decade following the debut of the Superstar — but like many trends made a major comeback in the ’00s, which, of course, now makes them ripe for yet another revival. The French company Jelly Shoes gives the PVC-injected footwear its name, although many also refer to the category as jellies.

Leaks of the Adidas Superstar Bubble began surfacing last year and generating intrigue, and the odd concept is now beginning to hit the market through Adidas’ platforms in overseas markets including Korea. Pricing, after converting currencies, comes in at roughly $100. Release information hasn’t yet been revealed for the U.S., but Footwear News will keep you abreast of any updates.
